The Trammps are an American disco and soul band from Philadelphia who became one of the pioneering acts in the disco movement of the 1970s. The group’s core lineup included lead vocalist Jimmy Ellis and drummer Earl Young, alongside brothers Stanley and Harold ‘Doc’ Wade, with production and musical contributions from Philadelphia producers Ronnie Baker and Norman Harris. The band rose to prominence in 1972 with a cover of ‘Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart,’ which reached the US R&B top 20, establishing their signature blend of soulful vocals and dance-oriented arrangements.
Throughout the mid-1970s, The Trammps released a series of successful singles including ‘Hold Back the Night’ (1975, UK number 5) and ‘That’s Where the Happy People Go’ (1976). However, the band achieved their greatest commercial and cultural impact with ‘Disco Inferno,’ released in 1976 and featured on the Grammy Award-winning Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. The track became an iconic disco anthem, topping the US Dance chart and eventually reaching number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1978.
