About Mungo Jerry
Biography / Discography
Mungo Jerry, formerly known as Mungo Jerry Blues Band, is a British folk rock, blues rock and skiffle-influenced band formed in Ashford, Middlesex, England, in 1970 by singer and guitarist Ray Dorset. The group is best known for its debut single In the Summertime, which topped the UK Singles Chart for seven weeks and sold an estimated 8 to 16 million copies worldwide.
Mungo Jerry first drew wide attention with a performance at the 1970 Hollywood Music Festival, on a bill alongside Black Sabbath and the Grateful Dead. The band went on to score nine UK chart singles, including a second number one with Baby Jump in 1971, plus five top-20 hits in South Africa and four Top 100 entries in Canada. Later singles such as Alright, Alright, Alright reached the UK Top 3.
Ray Dorset has remained the band’s constant frontman through numerous lineup changes since 1970, with past members including keyboardist Colin Earl, banjo and guitar player Paul King, and bassist John Godfrey. Mungo Jerry continued recording and performing across Europe in the decades following its 1970s chart peak, and the act is available to book for festivals, corporate events and private shows.
